Workshop themes

BaltGene 2017 is a meeting point for scientists and managers. Sharing experiences is important. Therefore, we have planned for several group discussions – both brief, informal ones between talks and also longer structured sessions. Our ambition is that BaltGene 2017 should result in improved science-management networks, and concrete suggestions for how the genetic level could be included in management and conservation of biodiversity in the Baltic Sea.

There will be two workshop sessions where we will discuss a theme in smaller groups. Each group is encouraged to come up with concrete suggestions for further action.

Day 1
Theme: Genetic diversity in management – why and how

  1. Why should we be specifically concerned about genetic biodiversity in the Baltic?
  2. What is needed in management with respect to genetic knowledge?
  3. How can genetics be integrated in existing marine monitoring activities?
  4. Which species should be prioritized for monitoring of genetic diversity?

Day 2
Theme: Marine spatial planning as a tool for managing genetic biodiversity

  1. Knowledge communication platforms – what is needed to increase communication between managers and scientists on genetic diversity?
  2. Genetics in MPA management plans - what is needed for improvement?
  3. How can governance structures be improved to assure adaptive management of Baltic Sea biodiversity?
  4. Green/blue infrastructure - what could be the role for maintaining genetic biodiversity?
